So much more than just a naked massage!

In a lovely leafy area in East Sussex you’ll discover Three Farthings, a place to relax, be pampered, massaged and to enjoy meals worthy of a top class restaurant. The place is owned and run by Theo and his partner Ken.

Apart from naturist massage, Three Farthings offers sublime accommodation as a homestay B&B.

There are several styles of naturist massage to choose from, all of which have a defined purpose, and are obviously carried out with both parties naked.

Should you decide to stay over, you can expect a good nights sleep in one of their superb bedrooms, especially after sampling some of the wonderful food cooked by Theo himself.

If you are thinking that this might be an expensive place to stay, then think again! The room rates are reasonable as is the excellent food, and here’s the amazing part:- Most of the profits generated go to charity!

So what made Theo and partner Ken decide to adopt this nudist lifestyle that gives so much both to their guests and to the deserving causes?

The interview with Theo

Nudist UK: What got you into Naturism?

Theo:– I have lived most of my life in Holland, where naturism is pretty much accepted as a lifestyle choice. I grew up in a naturist environment and it has always felt natural to be clothes-free when circumstances allowed me to be. In Amsterdam, where I lived, there were naturist beaches nearby, a naturist area in the forest right behind my house and several saunas in the neighbourhood, where nudity was mandatory.

When I started my massage training in 1991 it was an obvious choice to do naturist massage, both for practical reasons and for reasons of equality: when you are both naked you are on the same level of vulnerability and equal partners in the journey of discovery and healing.

Nudist UK:- What inspired you to create a naturist guest house?

Theo:- Friends! On a warm and sunny day in the summer of 2009 we had naturist friends over for lunch in the garden and they commented on the fact that we had done so much to make our house and garden suitable for a naturist lifestyle, and that it would be perfect to share this with other naturists by turning our home into a naturist B&B. Now I have always thought about having a B&B but never felt very comfortable with the idea of getting dressed for work, so the suggestion of starting a naturist B&B felt absolutely right. However, we knew that running a B&B with only two guest rooms wasn’t going to provide us with an income so we needed to find a better reason to invite “strangers” into our home.

Nudist UK:- How did it come about that you became a charitable venture?

Theo:- Ken and I were in Thailand when the tsunami hit on Boxing Day in 2004, claiming over two hundred thousand victims in affected areas around the globe. Fortunately we were both safe and, as I have a spiritual connection with Asia, we decided to do as much as we could do to help the Thai people to recover and rebuild.

At the time, I was owning and managing a graphic design company in Amsterdam and when I returned from Thailand after five weeks of being confronted with death and destruction, as well as witnessing hope and positivity, I decided to hand over the design company to the staff, to allow me to go back to Thailand to set up a health centre in the south, promoting traditional Thai medicine and offering therapies like herbal remedies and massage. When the centre was up and running, I handed the business over to the staff and came back to England, in search of a new challenge.

At the time, my design company in Amsterdam was financially supporting nine disabled orphans in Indonesia through a Dutch charity. A few years after handing over the company I discovered that the new management was going to discontinue the financial contributions to this charity.

Feeling a moral obligation to keep supporting the nine disabled orphans we were thus given the perfect reason to start the B&B, and thanks to the generous support of our B&B guests and my massage clients “our” children continue to have an outlook to a better future.

Nudist UK:- Have there been any embarrassing/awkward moments with guests?

Theo:- Overall, our guests have been very supportive of us offering homestay B&B and massages to raise funds for charity, and with naturism being the common denominator we find that our guests are generally more respectful of us, our home and of other people. Sometimes it can be difficult when you are inviting people you don’t know into your own private space, not knowing who is going to show up on your doorstep. But we are very fortunate to say that, so far, we never had any embarrassing or awkward moments with guests.

Nudist UK:- Where do you like to go on holiday?

Theo:- Being in the beautiful countryside of East Sussex with its own micro climate treating us to more hours of sunshine than anywhere else in the UK, and living in a house with a secluded garden perfectly suited for our naturist lifestyle, we hardly ever go on holidays! However, during the winter months, when the B&B is usually not very busy, Ken likes to spend time with friends in Scotland who also run a naturist B&B to raise funds for charity (www.westhighlandretreat.co.uk) and I usually go back to Thailand, to teach massage at one of the many schools in Chiang Mai and to help out at a naturist resort nearby (www.orientalvillage-chiangmai.com).
